Judy described this quilt in a lecture: “This funky alphabet quilt took first place in the Traditional Wall Quilt category at the APNQ show in Seattle in 1994, much to the surprise of many people, including me. I frankly wasn’t sure whether I should enter it in the traditional category or the innovative category; I settled on “traditional” because it was like the use-it-up, make-it-do scrap-bag quilts my Grandma often made. Sometimes I hang this quilt upside down, to more evenly distribute the wear and tear, and hardly anyone notices. Though many of my quilts are suffering from exposure to light, I just hang them on the walls and enjoy them. If anyone is going to use them up, it might as well be me—who else will love and appreciate them as much as I do?” Note that the letters X, Y and Z all appear in a single block.

This quilt was exhibited in a number of other shows, including the National Quilting Association HQ show in Maryland in 1996 and the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters show at the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center in Tillamook, Oregon in 1997. This quilt also appeared in the book “Quilts: A Living Tradition” by Robert Shaw. Quilt was started 4/1/1992 and finished 12/16/1992.
