Antique Double Irish Chain

This family quilt was made by Judy’s great-great-grandmother (Sarah Jane Call, 1842-1914) or great-great-great-grandmother (Mary Ann Kahl, 1825-1851). In a family video taken in 1983, Judy’s Aunt Ruth presented the quilt to her. She told the story: “This is the one our mother gave Lois that I’m not sure my grandmother or my great-grandmother made it. Lois left it in the cedar chest over at the old house, and things were getting stolen out of there, so I took it home. Now these little stitches, they’re this close together. Either my grandmother or my great-grandmother made it. As far as I know, after my grandmother died, my Aunt Carrie came out to the Hull place while we were there and brought this quilt to mother, and whether their mother made it or their grandmother made it, I don’t know. See, it’s been used, but it hasn’t been worn an awful lot.”
