Piece of Cake

This is a traditional Cake Stand block made in a Dawn to Dusk style. Judy featured this quilt in a number of classes and lectures, saying “My ‘Dawn to Dusk’ quilts feature traditional blocks, commercial prints, and a value gradation scheme I call ‘chain-letter gradation.’ I taught this gradation method as a class for years, but it has yet to become a book. I do plan to write it someday! And this one has strip-pieced borders. I had to add more fabrics to make this border—the blocks took 25 fabrics, and I needed 28 fabrics for the borders. As I recall, I added 3 lights, and just worked them into the gradation. I sewed 2-1/2″ strips of each border fabric into a long, graded strip unit about 26″ wide, then cut two wide strips for the outer borders, two narrow strips for the inner borders (I just turned them upside down) and two strips for the right and left binding. I didn’t want to bind the top and bottom edges of this quilt, so I sewed facing on to them and turned the facing to the back.” Quilt was started 4/4/1990 and finished some time in 1992.
