Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead

This quilt appeared in Judy’s book Design Your Own Quilts. Judy’s notes say “This One-of-a-Kind quilt, my entry in the Memories of Childhood contest, features Dorothy, Toto, a Kansas farmhouse, and a dead witch. The Kansas farmhouse and Dorothy theme blocks are linked by a pieced brick road, with bricks sized to accommodate the Toto print. During the composition process I realized that these major design elements couldn’t hold their own against additional pieced background blocks. The more subtle black and red plaid used to fill the center and to frame the road motif provided the needed contrast; two narrow red borders fill the resulting 2” gap. The Dorothy design is from Quilts & Other Comforts’ “Patchwork Pals” pattern. Note the dead witch under the farmhouse and the yellow “bricks” in the binding. Quilt was started 5/3/1988 and finished 8/14/1988
